World Water Day: every drop counts

Water Storage Cobblestone

World Water Day may be over, but attention to water remains essential. On March 22, the world observes World Water Day (World Water Day). This international day, organized by the United Nations, calls attention to the importance of water and sustainable water management. Because water is the basis of life, for people, nature and agriculture.

Water is also an indispensable resource in the ornamental plant industry. Plants need water to grow and flourish. At the same time, the future of our sector requires us to be increasingly conscious of how we use this precious resource. At FlorAmor, careful use of water has therefore been an essential part of our cultivation strategy for many years.

3.5 million plants entirely on rainwater

Every year we grow about 3.5 million plants at FlorAmor. For our cultivation we exclusively use collected rainwater.

This is possible because we consciously invest in rainwater harvesting at all of our sites, well above the legal requirements. The water that falls on our greenhouses and farm buildings is collected and stored in ponds, water basins and closed citernes. In this way, we build up our own water reserve that we use in cultivation throughout the year, with quality irrigation water as the basis for vital, healthy and strong plants.

A circular water system

In addition to rainwater harvesting, we are also strongly committed to water reuse.

When plants are watered, they don't absorb everything. Instead of excess water being lost, it is recaptured and returned to our water system. Then it is carefully treated so it can be safely used again.

The water goes through several steps:

  • collection in basins and reservoirs
  • filtration via either sand filters or disinfection with UV light
  • reuse in cultivation

In this way, we create a closed water circuit in which virtually no water is lost. Every drop gets a new purpose.

Water as a source of biodiversity

Meanwhile, our water basins also fulfill a second role. They have become small ecosystems where nature and cultivation meet.

Different species of fish live in the ponds and we are regularly visited by cormorants and oystercatchers.

It shows how thoughtful water management is not only efficient for cultivation, but can also create space for biodiversity on and around the farm.

Building sustainable floriculture together

World Water Day reminds us how valuable water is and how important it is to treat it with care. For FlorAmor, this is not a one-time commitment, but a continuous process of improvement, investment and forward thinking.

By utilizing rainwater, recycling water and investing in modern filtration and disinfection techniques, we continue to build sustainable and future-oriented ornamental cultivation every day.
